The club operates a scheme similar to traffic lights in relation to water safety, namely:

Green light: normal conditions; any crew may boat (subject to all other safety rules)

Amber light: moderate conditions; boating permitted subject restrictions in the rowing and sculling proficiency scheme (i.e. novices not permitted in singles etc).

Red and Amber: Only set during weekend morning sessions when the light might otherwise be on Red. Safety launches to be deployed along the river, and only large boats (fours/quads/eights) permitted out.

Red: No boating, regardless of skill or boat size.

The lights will be set by the safety officer, captain or a coach. If the light displayed would prevent you going out, you cannot go out. However, if the light would allow you to go out, it is still up to you to make your own assessment of whether you can cope with the conditions.
